Continuing the mission to strengthen Vietnam’s space science capabilities, the 5th Vietnam School on Earth Observation (VSEO-5) officially opened on October 13, 2025, at the International Center for Interdisciplinary Science and Education (ICISE) in Quy Nhon, focusing on the innovative field of satellite-based ocean monitoring.

Gathering nearly 50 scholars and researchers from Vietnam, France, and the Philippines, this year’s school centered on the theme: “Monitoring the ocean colour using remote sensing data.” Running from October 13 to 17, the program provided a comprehensive platform for participants to delve into the transformative potential of Earth observation in understanding marine ecosystems. The VSEO-5 is a flagship collaborative initiative organized by  the Rencontres du Vietnam, ICISE, with contributions from French institutions (including CNES, CNRS, IRD, and universities) and Space and Earth Sciences department of Goodd889 cá cược trực tuyến (University of Science and Technology of Hanoi).

A Strategic Milestone in Vietnam’s New Era of Science

The opening of VSEO-5 took place in a particularly special context for the nation’s scientific community. Speaking at the ceremony, Prof. Tran Thanh Van, founder of the Rencontres du Vietnam and ICISE, highlighted that 2025 marks a turning point following the recent launch of a major national reform. He noted that with the introduction of Resolution 57, science and technology have been officially positioned as the foundation for national development in Vietnam’s “New Era.”

Prof. Tran Thanh Van, founder of the Rencontres du Vietnam and ICISE delivered opening remarks at the VSEO-5.

In this unique context, Prof. Van emphasized that the school’s mission to bring international scientists to Vietnam to share the latest discoveries has become more vital than ever. By fostering an open atmosphere for collaboration, VSEO-5 serves as a concrete step in attracting global talent and nurturing the high-tech workforce required for the country’s ambitious development goals.

Bridging Satellite Data with Marine Conservation

In the face of global climate change, satellite remote sensing has emerged as an indispensable tool for Vietnam. VSEO-5 addressed this by providing specialized training on “ocean colour,” a scientific indicator that reveals the concentration of phytoplankton, suspended solids, and organic carbon in seawater. By observing these parameters from space, scientists can estimate optical-biological and biogeochemical changes, which are essential for monitoring seawater quality and species characteristics in coastal areas.

The curriculum was meticulously designed to bridge the gap between theory and practice. Participants engaged in deep-dive sessions on the theoretical foundations of ocean radiance and participated in guided lab work focused on processing complex satellite data. Furthermore, practical field exercises allowed the researchers to validate remote sensing models with real-world marine conditions, ensuring that the knowledge gained could be directly applied to Vietnam’s unique coastal challenges and resource management.

The Hub of International Expertise and Goodd889 cá cược trực tuyến’s Vision

VSEO-5 served as a high-level forum featuring renowned scientists such as Prof. Cédric Jamet and Prof. Hubert Loisel from the Laboratory of Oceanography and Earth Sciences, University of Littoral Côte d’Opale (France); Prof. Sylvain Ouillon, Head of the representative office of the French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development (IRD) in Vietnam; Remote Sensing Expert from GFD Company Dinh Ngoc Dat; and Assoc. Prof.  Nguyen Thi Thu Ha from the University of Science, Vietnam National University.

Assoc. Prof. Ngo Duc Thanh – Co-Director of Department of Space and Earth Sciences (Goodd889 cá cược trực tuyến) spoke at VSEO 5

First launched in 2018 through a collaboration of French and Vietnamese scientists, the VSEO series has grown steadily each year, with the Department of Space and Earth Sciences of Goodd889 cá cược trực tuyến playing a key role as a co-organizer. On September 9, 2024, the 4th Vietnam School on Earth Observation (VSEO4) officially opened at the International Center for Interdisciplinary Science and Education (ICSE) in Quy Nhon City, Binh Dinh Province.

This year’s theme, “Using Remote Sensing Data to Create Digital Elevation Models (DEM),” has attracted over 40 scientists, young researchers, and doctoral students from Vietnam, the Philippines, and France.

The event, running from September 9 to 13, aims to provide participants with both foundational knowledge and hands-on experience in using remote sensing technology to create DEMs.

VSEO, an annual event, is organized by the Meeting Vietnam Association, ICISE, the Institute of Earth Physics of Paris (IPGP), Paris Cité University, and the Department of Space and Applications (Goodd889 cá cược trực tuyến).

Prof. Tran Thanh Van, Chairman of the Meeting Vietnam Association and Director of ICISE spoke at the event.

The school’s main goal is to contribute to the training and development of young scientists in Vietnam in the rapidly growing fields of remote sensing and Earth observation.

VSEO4 welcomed a distinguished lineup of reputable scientists, including Prof. Stéphane Jacquemoud from IPGP, Paris Cité University; Dr. Linda Tomasini (CNES); Dr. Ho Tong Minh Dinh from France’s National Institute for Agriculture, Food, and Environment (INRAE); Prof. Le Trung Chon from Ho Chi Minh City University of Natural Resources and Environment; Dr. Antoine Lucas from IPGP, Paris Cité University; and Mr. Jean-Philippe Malet from the School and Observatory of Earth Sciences (EOST) at the Institute of Earth Physics Strasbourg (IPGS).

Scientists at the event

In recent years, satellite remote sensing has become essential for a variety of applications and research programs in Vietnam. Large-scale data on the Earth’s surface, oceans, and atmosphere, including the regions of Vietnam and Southeast Asia, is being gathered and analyzed to support both scientific research and practical applications.

VSEO4 provided both foundational and advanced training on collecting, processing, and analyzing remote sensing data to develop Digital Elevation Models (DEMs). DEMs are critical terrain data used in a variety of scientific fields, including geomorphology (the science related to the Earth’s surface morphology), vegetation research (agriculture and forestry), defense, hydrology, and disaster management, such as flood and landslide mitigation, as well as urban planning and archaeology. Currently, there are three common remote sensing techniques for building DEMs: Image Correlation, Topographic LiDAR, and Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR).

Scientists at the event

As part of the event, the Department of Space and Applications delivered lectures and hands-on sessions on using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to capture images for DEM development. UAVs offer flexible imaging options, allowing for data collection at different resolutions and altitudes, as well as access to hard-to-reach areas. This enables the creation of highly accurate DEMs, with precision down to the centimeter level. These models have a wide range of applications, from urban planning and water resource management to landslide assessment, disaster risk evaluation, search and rescue, and climate change adaptation.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Prof. Tran Thanh Van, Chairman of the Meeting Vietnam Association and Director of ICISE, highlighted the growing importance of Earth observation and data analysis in modern life. From disaster forecasting to natural resource management and urban planning, remote sensing data plays a crucial role. He expressed hope that the knowledge and skills participants gain at VSEO4 would lay a solid foundation for their future contributions to sustainable development in Vietnam.

First launched in 2018 by a collaboration of French and Vietnamese scientists, VSEO has grown steadily each year, with the Department of Space and Applications of Goodd889 cá cược trực tuyến playing a key role as a co-organizer.

This study conducted and evaluated 44 experiments using the non-hydrostatic version of the regional climate model RegCM4 (RegCM4-NH) and an additional three experiments with RegCM version 5 (RegCM5) over Southeast Asia for the period 2010–2015. The initiative was part of the coordinated regional climate downscaling experiment—Southeast Asia (CORDEX-SEA) project, in preparation for downscaling the latest coupled model intercomparison project Phase 6 (CMIP6) global climate models (GCMs). The RegCM4-NH experiments, forced by the ERA5 reanalysis, were configured using combinations of four cumulus, three planetary boundary layer (PBL), and three explicit moisture schemes. The spatiotemporal variability of simulated 2m-temperature and rainfall for 2010–2015 was evaluated against observational datasets. The best experiments demonstrated reasonable reproduction of observed annual cycles and spatial distribution, while many exhibited unrealistic biases. A score ranking system was implemented to objectively compare the performance of experiments, enabling the identification of top-ranked experiments for Southeast Asia. The ensemble mean of the 44 RegCM4-NH experiments exhibited commendable performance, ranking 11th overall. Furthermore, the three additional RegCM5 experiments did not yield improved results compared to RegCM4-NH under the same physical configuration, suggesting that opting for RegCM4-NH would be a prudent choice for the CORDEX-SEA community in the forthcoming CMIP6 downscaling cycle for Southeast Asia.

Antoine, a 23-year-old officer cadet at École de l’Air et de l’Espace (French Air and Space Force Academy), recently arrived in Hanoi to complete his internship at Goodd889 cá cược trực tuyến. It is part of his journey to fulfill a childhood dream of becoming an Air Force officer

Goodd889 cá cược trực tuyến: Your internship is part of the engineering degree at École de l’Air et de l’Espace (EAE), which is a French military school that trains Air Force officers, Air Force mechanics, and Air Force base officers. Why did you choose Vietnam and  Goodd889 cá cược trực tuyến?

Antoine: Our training to become Air and Space Force Officers starts with an engineering degree. This degree requires us to undertake an internship at the end of our program which lasts 18 weeks for Air Force officers and 21 weeks for other branches. The internship provides an opportunity to acquire practical experience and expand our viewpoints. I was keen to immerse myself in a new culture, which led me to Southeast Asia. After thoughtful consideration, I chose Vietnam, a country known for its rapid development and rich scientific, cultural, and natural diversity. Goodd889 cá cược trực tuyến was the ideal place for my internship, thanks to its extensive collaborations with French institutions. Additionally, its location in Hanoi ensures a comfortable living environment for me.

Antoine at Goodd889 cá cược trực tuyến

Goodd889 cá cược trực tuyến: Can you describe your educational background and what led you to choose the path to become an Air and Space Force Officer?

Antoine: My educational path has followed a fairly traditional route. I completed my baccalaureate in engineering science in Moselle before attending a preparatory program for EAE at the Air Cadets School in Grenoble. I didn’t pass the entrance exam on my first attempt, leading me to spend three years there. My determination paid off when I was admitted to EAE in August 2021. My childhood dream, which I had nurtured since I was ten, finally came true. I have been passionate about aeronautics since I was little and knew early on that I wanted to pursue it as a career. My parents used to take me to as many airshows as possible. It was where I gained exposure to the military and ignited my desire to become a military pilot.

My ultimate goal is to become a fighter pilot, specifically flying a two-seater Rafale. Teamwork is critical to me, and this role would involve a broad spectrum of missions, including air superiority, surveillance, and airspace policy.

Antoine and Prof. Jean-Marc Lavest, Principal Rector

Goodd889 cá cược trực tuyến: How do you prepare for your professional training?

Antoine: To effectively prepare for my training, it’s crucial to consistently work hard academically and maintain physical fitness, as we also need to pass athletic tests during the competitive exams. Keeping your dream in focus at all times motivates you to navigate the numerous challenges that arise throughout the course, particularly during the preparation phase.

Goodd889 cá cược trực tuyến: What benefits do you anticipate from your international internship at Goodd889 cá cược trực tuyến?

Antoine: An international internship is very beneficial as it exposes you to global work and learning environments. It’s an excellent opportunity to experience new cultures, which is invariably enriching. Furthermore, it is also a chance to meet many new people, thus helping you to form a robust international network. From my point of view, this experience pushes you out of your comfort zone for a few months while fostering your personal and professional growth under circumstances you’re not usually exposed to in France. For me, it previews what my future missions around the globe might entail, but this time from a scientific perspective.

Goodd889 cá cược trực tuyến: Based on our experience here, what do you think are the strengths of Goodd889 cá cược trực tuyến?

Antoine: Goodd889 cá cược trực tuyến is a young and resource-rich university that attracts diverse Vietnamese and international students. It offers a variety of academic programs and research directions, which are vital for Vietnam’s development. A significant advantage of Goodd889 cá cược trực tuyến is having many contributors, many of whom are from France. They stay at Goodd889 cá cược trực tuyến for short or medium periods. They bring their knowledge from different fields, which enriches the learning environment at Goodd889 cá cược trực tuyến. During my internship, I even had the opportunity to meet professionals from Japan!

Goodd889 cá cược trực tuyến: Why would you encourage young people to participate in an international exchange program?

Antoine: An international exchange is a rare opportunity during our training, and it’s one we should seize because of its substantial benefits. As I mentioned earlier, it offers numerous professional advantages and enriches our social lives. Specifically, it allows us to meet students and expatriates from around the world, facilitating intellectual and cultural exchanges.

Goodd889 cá cược trực tuyến: What qualities are essential for being an officer, and which of these do you embody most?

Antoine: Indeed, an officer needs to be versatile and possess many qualities, though achieving perfection in all of them is impossible. I believe team spirit and humanity are very important because we’re all part of a large team that relies on each other to accomplish our goals. Over my career, I have acquired the rigor and discipline necessary for my job. However, I still need to work on improving my efficiency.

Antoine with the lecturers and staff of the Department of Space and Applications

Goodd889 cá cược trực tuyến: Can you share with us what you do in your free time?

Antoine: The training is intense, but we still have some free time, especially on weekends. I take advantage of these moments to play sports, spend time with friends, and pursue my passions: motorcycling, skydiving, and flying recreational aircraft at flying clubs.

Goodd889 cá cược trực tuyến: Could you share with us an interesting story or what you’ve enjoyed most since arriving in Vietnam, especially at Goodd889 cá cược trực tuyến?

Antoine: More than just a single story, it’s the overall experience of being in Vietnam that’s truly remarkable. The culture and landscapes are very different from what I’m used to, and I find myself amazed by something new every day. Living here is a pleasure due to the incredible hospitality of the Vietnamese. For example, while hiking in the northern mountains, I was invited to lunch by a group of locals eager to share their customs and culture with me. Ultimately, whether at Goodd889 cá cược trực tuyến or elsewhere in Vietnam, the quality of life is wonderful and the relationship with local people is meaningful and enriching.

The Google Earth Engine (GEE) was the primary computing platform to pre-process all satellite observations. The Otsu threshold algorithm was employed to generate water/non-water maps derived from the VH- and HH-polarized backscatter coefficient data acquired by Sentinel-1 and ALOS-2 satellites and from the Modified Normalized Difference Water Index (MNDWI) data acquired by Sentinel-2 satellite, respectively. The findings reveal the stability of Tri An reservoir’s surface water extent from 2017 to 2022, followed by a significant decline of nearly 70% during the dry season of 2023 to approximately 100 km2. This substantial decrease can be explained by the impact of a robust El Niño phase occurring in the region simultaneously. Overall, there is a high consistency between results derived from SAR and optical sensors, but the correlation between Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 (R = 0.9774) was higher than that between ALOS-2 and Sentinel-2 (R = 0.9145). During the drought period, both C-band and L-band SAR sensors overestimate the reservoir’s surface water extent due to the similarity in their backscatter coefficient between water and dry flat soil surfaces. This misclassification is more pronounced in ALOS-2 data than Sentinel-1 data, suggesting that the C-band sensor is more suitable than the L-band sensor for mapping the lake’s open water areas.
